Crumlin Children's Hospital

Location: Dublin Area: 20,000 sq. m. Completion: Ongoing Cost: €Ongoing

Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, was designed by RKD Architects in the 1940's as the main Catholic children's hospital to serve the needs of the city.

Over the years, radical changes in population, the complexity of medical services and new approaches to the treatment of childhood illness have all combined to alter what is required of this landmark building. The average duration of a child's stay in hospital has reduced from around one month to 3 days and there has been a huge increase in the demand for out-patient services.

RKD was commissioned to undertake an intensive review of current and proposed new services and to make recommendations on how the hospital (also an important teaching facility) could grow in a systematic way while continuing to offer its normal daily services.

RKD prepared a detailed master plan that shows how the hospital can be developed over a fifteen year period.

RKD Architects continue to be engaged by the hospital for significant new projects to include:

  • New Laboratories
  • Outpatient's Tower
  • National Cardiac Unit
  • Oncology Department
  • New Intensive Care Units
